Where Creativity Comes to Life: D&G Mixed Media Art & Design

Art has the incredible power to evoke emotions, tell stories, and bring beauty into our lives. It becomes even more extraordinary when creativity runs in the family, inspiring each member to explore their artistic talents. In the vibrant world of D&G Mixed Media Art & Design, a family of artistic painters and illustrators has come together to create awe-inspiring customized urban footwear, apparel, and artwork that speaks volumes.

The story behind D&G Mixed Media Art & Design begins with a mother's keen eye for her son's artistic potential. At a young age, Takiyah Dixon noticed her son’s innate talent for freehand drawing, sparking a passion that would shape their family's artistic journey. With a personal love for acrylic and charcoal urban painting, Takiyah knew that fostering her son's creativity could become a meaningful way to spend time together and nurture his artistic skills.

As her son continued to grow and educate himself using mixed media, the family realized they had not one, but two budding artists in their midst. A beautiful synergy unfolded, and the idea of sharing their artistic talents with the world began to take shape. Walking through the art district of Asheville, NC, a simple question ignited a transformative idea – could they sell their drawings one day?

Driven by the desire to cultivate their gifts and set the stage for success, D&G Mixed Media Art & Design was born. Committed to providing exceptional and innovative art and design services, the family behind D&G harnesses the power of various mediums, including acrylic, chalk, tempera, and digital art, to create customized designs that resonate with their clients' unique styles.

As a parent and a woman of faith, I want to leave a legacy for my sons. Not just any legacy but the ones that the Bible speaks of. It’s been a desire of mine since I could understand the word of God/Bible at about 11 or 12 years old. Because I am a single, divorced, mother of two sons, this society we live in today often discounts individuals with these testimonies. And anyone who knows me well knows I love a good, “I can show you better than I can tell you,” moment!

How has the passion for acrylic and charcoal urban painting influenced your family's artistic journey?

I, personally, have been pretty good with freehand art. I originally fell in love with art and my abilities during my senior year of high school. And at that time, I was like," Why did I wait so long to take an art class? It was therapeutic. Surely when my sons entered the school and were assigned projects, I would assist with showing them quick ways to draw characters and using shapes to create cool art. It just really took off from there. As my sons got older and began to get more interested in the anime community, their drawings became better and better.

What motivated you to start D&G Mixed Media Art & Design and specialize in customized urban footwear and apparel?

I began to catalog my oldest son's drawings and send them to our family to show them how well he could draw; he noticed. One day he asked me if he could sell his art after watching a YouTube personality. I was surprised, and let him know that he could sell his art, but there were a few additional steps we needed to go through to make sure he was legit! At that time, I also, begin to cultivate his interest and taking to various art districts in the southern regions, FL, GA, and NC. It was when we went on a family trip to Asheville, NC, that we went to an art store/warehouse, and they sold apparel with art designs on them as well as metal sculptures. My son's desire to sell his art was heightened, and he began pressing me on the matter of selling his art. Because of his enthusiasm, I decided to gift both of my son(s) an LLC for their birthday in September of 2022. the rest is history...

Can you share some insights into the creative process and mediums you use, such as acrylic, chalk, tempera, and digital art?

My sons are inspired by what's currently on the "Sundee Mods," I actually have no idea what that is. I just hear it on the TV ALL THE TIME. They will see something on there and immediately go get their sketchbook and draw. I think, and this is a big thing, that the mods that they watch are characters from other games, anime, or cartoons, modified into a popular game...

Typically, my sons will see themselves in the character and draw themselves modified as a game character. Once I look over it, I make suggestions and ask them how they would like to present their art to the community. Mostly they create comic strips. However, we have a new creation that is going to be released for a "Back to School" celebration which will be the main character on the young boys' clothing line. Additionally, when creating art, we use acrylic paint or acrylic markers. This is the medium we use for customizing shoes, bookbags, and canvas.

I would say that I mostly work in the digital media area (and acrylic paint). I use the Adobe suite for creating and editing designs such as logo design, website development, or digital design. Particularly for our apparel designs.

However, my haven is being able to create art via acrylic paint and canvas. As a family, we certainly have our comfort zones and our favorites. Collectively we are able to create and produce mixed media for our customers that are hip, urban, and fun! Through our digital design and logo design, and website development, we also offer additional consultation to help businesses along the way.

What are some of the most memorable customized art pieces you have created? Any particular projects that hold a special meaning to you?

One of the most challenging customizations we have done is the MARVEL/DC character/logo Air Jordan. The request was for 13-15 logos and characters per shoe. It was the most challenging and the most fun! The best part was the happy customer. We are always appreciative of the customers providing guidance for what they want AND allowing our creative abilities to flourish through customization.

How do you empower and educate your community through your art and design services? Are there any specific initiatives or workshops you offer?

We offer mentorship for young artists as well as one on one opportunities for education on the main concept of art. As a former educator for over 20 years, I believe in giving back through mentorship, building relationships, and sharing knowledge. This is done through donating our time, talents, and treasures in the Hillsborough and Polk County school districts.

Can you share some success stories or feedback from customers who have enjoyed your customized artwork?

Hello Reader — It’s me, Emily. I wanted to share with you a personal review of D&G.

I had an old pair of white Converse that needed some help. So, I reached out to D&G to make them colorful enough to wear to Polk Pride’s Pride in the Park event on June 17. When I received my customized Converse from D&G Mixed Media Art & Design, I was blown away. The transformation was beyond what I had imagined. They truly reflected pride, love, and unity.

What stood out to me was the passion and dedication evident in every detail. D&G Mixed Media Art & Design went above and beyond to create a masterpiece that not only looked amazing but also represented something meaningful to me. The artists' commitment to spreading joy and self-expression was truly inspiring.

To Takiyah and the talented team at D&G Mixed Media Art & Design, thank you for bringing my vision to life. The artistry and intention behind your work are exceptional. I cherish my customized shoes and the statement they make about embracing our true selves.

How do you approach freelance projects and design consultations to ensure your clients' visions come to life?

All freelance designs require a minimum of two consultations (preferably in person, but we conduct consultations virtually as well). Consultations include the completion of an intake questionnaire and an opportunity to discuss freely the desired request. This allows the freelance designer to truly understand the need, want, and vision of the customer's request. We want the customer to feel comfortable therefore, additional time with the freelance designer can be requested. Contact D&G Mixed Media Art & Design now!

Are there any plans for expanding your services or exploring new artistic mediums in the future?

Absolutely, I foresee this happening sooner than later. We have already begun to receive custom orders that challenge our artist abilities in a positive way. Some of the mediums we are exploring is stitching (for apparel, shoes, etc.).

Can you provide some advice or tips for aspiring artists and individuals looking to incorporate customized artwork into their lives?

My advice would be to keep it fun, organized, and timely when you are customizing. Also, make sure you stay up to date on what your consumer population likes and get ahead of it. Don't be afraid to take risks or try something different.
